I'm stumped.

Today I am linking up at Linda's 'Stumped Party' at Craftaholics Anonymous. I am so glad we are all going to "reach out" to each other today and help!! No, I did not clean for the pics. This is real life dawlin'.

This is our gameroom. It is open and right off the kitchen. It is a great space and we use it everyday. When Monkey was younger and on days that I didn't feel well I would just close the gate and we would play for hours in here.

If you are sitting on the couch, this is your view. Can you tell there are rooms on the left?

This is what you see if you are standing in the doorway.

Do you see the toys??? They need to be contained.

Before we consult, these are my non-negotiables:
  1. Paint: No way. You should have seen this room when we moved in. I love the colors!!
  2. Furniture can't leave: The couch, chair and *armoire have to stay. {for today's purpose...armoire might be negotiable.}
  3. Rug: I picked a sample of this Shaw rug and had it cut and bound. It is amazing and the colors are gorgeous. It hides kid-mess and anything else.
  4. Star: I'm a Texas girl. It can move but I love it!
My ideas:
We have been trying to come up with a plan for the last couple of weeks. When I found Ana, I knew I wanted to make one of her designs at Knock Off Wood. We just now have to figure out what we want to make.

This Pottery Barn Cameron system or a version of it?

I like the idea of baskets and closed storage.

Or this one...
I like how there is a little bench.
Or should we go all out and build THIS one?

Well it wouldn't be THE WHOLE system....since the room isn't that huge.
My plan:
  • If we build something pretty big, it will need to go on the outside wall {star wall}.
  • If we build a version of this system that's small enough, it will go on the inside wall where the mirror is. I would just move the couch to the other corner and reconfigure the room. The fort will have to relocate to his room.
I can not imagine how many toys, games, and treasures we will acquire in the upcoming years. This is my first kid and I can see already how much one kid can have.

How much room am I going to need??? Is it possible to "over-build?" Please, I am open for advice, opinions, thoughts, ANYTHING!

  1. I like the 1st option the most! I think option #3 could still look "too busy"... stuff will be overflowing in real life most likely. The first one makes everything look nice and neat!

  2. See, I think that if you built the smaller one there would be more of a problem of overflow. I like the bigger one. My kid has a book shelf all to himself and is already out of room for more and he's only two! I just think the more boxes or baskets you can separate toys and other stuff into, the less mess there is. If you made the larger one smaller, I would make it narrower and not shorter. The short ones look like they belong in a kids room. The taller one looks more like a book shelf. That's just my opinion on the practicality of it, I'm not too knowledgeable on the decor part. My home is just a mixed up jumble of things that we've had or gotten for free! -Jami

  3. Well I am a Canadian girl but I love your Texas star too.
I would love to see more of your lovely front window. Maybe with two chairs angled with a nice table in between to hold that cup of coffee or tea while reading.
Of course that means moving the couch so I don't know if that fits any where else.
Wish I could be of more help. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

  4. I like all of them. We have been trying to get rid of the 'toy look' in our house. My Monkey just turned 4 and I have to say...the toys are getting bigger and even more of an eyesore to look at. I cannot even tell you how unattractive I think Transformers are! LOL

In my opinion, you can't overbuild. Go for it!

  5. I like the first one, but keeping the open area in the bottom only, and keeping the top area with doors {doors straight across}. That middle section on the first one, and the second and third pictures just say {this will be climbed} to me.

Does the sofa fit on the wall where the basketball hoop and book rack are? If so, I'd center the armoire and move the chair over to the window corner on an angle. Especially if you would be planning on having one of these storage systems put in on the wall where the star presently is.

I know it's tough with their toys, especially the big ones. Been there! : )

  6. Hi Norma Lee,
So glad you joined the party! I'm LOVING your paint job! Looks fab. You definitely have a room with good bones to work with. I'm going to side with Just Add Walter. I liked #1 the best for a couple reasons: you can hide most of the toys between the baskets and the cabinets so that you can have a real front room back when you have company over. I liked the bench idea on #2, but your room doesn't look terribly big, so space may be an issue. Plus you already have your sofa and chair for seating. Plus with the cabinets, you could have fun decorating with them on top and stuff as well (or use it for more basket storage :) I think it's awesome you're going to build something! Way to go! Can't wait to see how it turns out. You really can't go wrong with any of those options. I'm sure you'll do a lovely job. Be sure to stop by and let me know when you've posted after pics. I'd love to see!
    best wishes,
    Linda
PS keep the star. It's awesome!

  7. I agree with Kathy that the doors on top, and then what you want them to be able to access easily. I think it will look less cluttered that way to. Love the baskets with labels in #3. Good luck and love the paint job and decor! Beautiful room.

  8. I also like the first one because your kids would actually be able to reach the stuff Unlike witht the last one). Plus you could hide stuff in the cupboards. If you're on a budget you could make your own storage bins. Here's a great tutorial for that http://sew4home.com/projects/storage-solutions/370-stylish-baby-nursery-collapsible-storage-baskets
