Sometimes we need a little motivation. Sometimes we need more. Like a deadline. Thank you Melissa. She hosted the famous Procrastinator's Party for people like me. {see Mom. I'm not the only one. giggle.}If you don't know Melissa, head on over and meet her. She is inspiring and I marvel at her talents.
Today is the big reveal. Thanks to Mrs. M., I remembered. See last night she informed me that this weekend would not be the weekend of the 17th. That would be last weekend. Just one of the reasons why my lil' sis is fabulous. Do you remember this door?
I had originally reported that the door was about 60 years old. My mom thought about it and the door is around 80 years old. This weekend was beautiful and cool which allowed an MSer like me to get out and work on it! BBD took care of Monkey while I finished painting. I painted it Black Suede- a Behr color from Home Depot. I did not prime it. I just sanded it with my Black and Decker Mouse hand sander. I did not want to use the electric sander around the window because I didn't want to risk doing damage to the window. Instead I used my foam sander.
Yes. I know I committed to having a design on the glass. I was going to frost something but instead I browsed Etsy and found an Etched Vinyl Monogram that I am going to adorn the door with. I wish I could remember who it was that sold it but I can't right now.
I lightly sanded the frame to give it this worn look.
The hardware. I was going to remove it and do the crock-pot treatment as mentioned in the Before post.I am a lot of things but one of the things I am not is a locksmith. I did not trust myself to remove the hardware and then be able to put all the
thing-a-magiggies where they are supposed to go. I thought about sanding but I didn't want to sand down the detail so insttead I made a solution to clean the hardware.
Brass/Copper Hardware Solution:
1/4 C flour
1/4 C salt
1/4 C vinegar
1/4 C lemon juice
I stirred this together until it was a paste. I put a pretty thick coat of this on. At first I would check on it just to make sure it wasn't doing something terribly wrong to the finish. I would recommend doing a spot test before you cover your whole antique hardware with this like I did. After a couple of hours, the hardware was clean and looking good. I did not want it perfect. I just wanted it cleaned up. What makes this door unique to me is the dings, scratches and imperfections.
And this is the reason why the door is not hanging. The original hinges don't match up to our door frame. I love my sweet BBD but he won't be the one to work on the hinges. I will have to wait for at least a week or two until the carpenter comes to install the built ins in the study.
